Working with Guy Passey: The Hi8us Perspective

Hi8us Midlands has worked with other professonal illustrators before, usually more locally based. On this project, we were looking for someone who could bring to life young peoples’ ideas but also illustrate in a style that appealed to them and their peers. We were introduced to a range of illustrators, many of them were extremely talented but had portfolios that didn’t represent a broad range of styles. Then Guy sent through his portfolio—the range was fantastic, we showed it to the young people and they all found something they liked. Guy had also done quite a lot of storyboarding for films and adverts, which was very useful. Our only hesitation was that he was based in Brighton and we are in Birmingham! We’ve been working with Guy since around February this year and found that the distance didn’t hinder the project at all.

Guy was very enthusiastic about working with the young people on the project, making a couple of journeys to Birmingham to do character and illustration workshop sessions with them. He seemlessly transfers between the professional illustration environment to the participatory, informal arts education setting.

Guy is extremely professional, creative and thorough and—he not only meets all the deadlines, he was very good at setting them too! He put a lot of time into communicating with Dave Gray and Andy Anderson at Hi8us, who worked on pulling everything together in the animation and the website. He was great at creatively collaborating with them and made it work really well despite the distance by always being in touch and available when needed. Dave & Andy did all the final colouring on the animation with some direction from Guy. The collaboration with Guy was a great success, exceeding our expectations: the results speak for themselves!
